Brampton Angling Association was established in 1856 for the preservation of trout in the Rivers Irthing, Gelt and their tributaries. In 1891 an agreement was reached with the Earl of Carlisle to rent fishing in the Rivers Irthing, Gelt, Kingwater and Cambeck. A copy of that memorandum of agreement can be viewed on this website.

The Association continues to provide angling for residents of Brampton and surrounding areas on the Rivers Irthing, Gelt and King Water. The Association also welcomes members from outside the area and issues permits to fish to visiting anglers. An application form for membership or the renewal of subscriptions by existing members is available from the permit information page.

The objects of the Association are at all times to serve the needs of the Community and are as follows: -

The whole of Brampton Angling Association water is designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and is a Candidate Special Area of Conservation. The Association controls fishing on large sections of the River Irthing, a major tributary of the River Eden, running close to Hadrian's Wall for much of it's length, and the Rivers Gelt and King Water. With easy access to most stretches, it's waters vary from the boulder-strewn streams of the upper Gelt and King Water to the broader pools that typify the lower Irthing until it joins the Eden.

The area abounds with wildlife including often seen kingfishers, red squirrels, deer and otters.

Brampton Angling Association Members will receive a 10% discount on all purchases from the New Mills Trout Farm tackle shop on production of their 2008 season permit.
